Security in Location apps

By Lois Park

All modern smartphones which have been made in the last 3 years have a GPS chip in them or more precisely aGPS. Its purpose was so that map applications could pin point where you were and give you directions to where you wish to go. This appears like it is very handy if its only you that knows your whereabouts

There have been a considerable number of location aware or location-centric social media tools lately, such as:

Gowalla

Foursquare

Brightkite

Loopt

Google Buzz

They permit you to update your chums on your location, but who else is watching

Now with even Twitter and Facebook permitting you to add your location to tweets, how safe is that info As your messages are open for any person to view, potential burglars could be searching for chances to break in when they know you are out. Other safety concerns also include people stalking each other, it occurs more often than you believe.

So what can be done Well, you will need to evaluate your safety worries with the convenience of your friends knowing where you are. To some it is a no-brainer the fun factor for such applications massively outweigh the side effects, should it even come to that. For others that are more worried you are going to need to go into the settings of the location programme you use to try to learn how you can increase your security and control who has access to your locations. Always be careful where and with who you share your location. Some media tools update social sites for you instantly telling your friends where you are. Apps like this can be very handy when you need to find your way around and you will never be loast again but just remember to turn them off when they are not needed.

Prosyn advise that for business reasons, all privacy option settings be set to the maximum for security. For other IT support questions do make contact with our team.
