Helpers in Hong Kong-Overcoming Cultural Issues Easier for Helpers in Hong Kong

By Alice Sy

There are many helpers in Hong Kong struggling to work in a foreign household in Hong Kong itself or in another far away region, especially the western hemisphere. While the benefits are indeed greater, the cultural challenge is also higher but over time, traces of differences gradually disappear, for the helpers it has simply become a lifestyle.

Working and living in other households in your own country can prove to be challenging enough, what more if you have to do it in a home foreign to yours. That's what these helpers have been doing their entire job, working for employers and understanding their needs at the same time regardless of nationality.

For the helpers in Hong Kong though, cultural differences are mere barriers that can be easily overthrown especially if it is getting in the way to success. This is why these hard working helpers undergo special training to learn the ways of every culture, the more knowledge in every foreign flavor, the better.

Of course, adapting to another's lifestyle is not necessarily forgetting one's roots. In working as a helper for families, the memory should be sharp because the lessons learned in every culture will always be crucial in future jobs, at least for these helpers. No matter where the helper is, the risk of being true to one's origin is always there, regardless if it becomes a source of misunderstanding.

Helpers in Hong Kong can be considered multi-cultured and it's not by chance but by necessity. Working for families with different backgrounds and lifestyles serves as training and a gem to their resumes. This even benefits the families as both try to set differences aside to make the relationship work. Well this only proves that being a domestic helper defies just cultural differences, it's about the similarities of being human in the end.
