Starting A Cleaning Business: Is It For You?

By Bob William

There are thousands of people out there trying to find a way to take charge of their income by starting a home-based business of their own. Starting a cleaning business can be a very challenging yet rewarding decision. From commercial to residential cleaning businesses they offer many great benefits:

- minimal start-up capital requirements

- the capacity to quickly become profitable

- easily worked part-time and built into full-time businesses

- choice of hours based on your target clients (banker's hours or graveyard shift)

- considered recession-proof by many when targeting commercial businesses

Like any other venture in life, starting a cleaning business successfully does not happen overnight. It will take plenty of sweat and hard work. It will also require a strategic approach. One key to success in business, whether starting a cleaning business or any other business for that matter, is having a formula. Most service-based businesses (cleaning businesses, lawn-care, pressure-washing, etc) share the same basic principles of operation. The growth of your business will be determined by how many people you are able to serve and how well you serve them; and to grow your cleaning business in quantity and quality there needs to be a method to your approach. Here is a basic formula I utilize when planning any start-up business:

- Plan - a carefully considered written strategy will be your road-map towards success and will help keep you on track

- Proven Processes - systems bring consistency, efficiency, and effectiveness to what you do and how you do it while amplifying the fruit from working your plan

- Perseverance- dedication to the plan and lots of hard work to make it happen, good, bad or indifferent, is a must for your plan to be successful in the long-term.

With a solid plan, solid systems, and the dedication to work them without relenting will create great success in any venture you set out to conquer. The next item you will want to think about now is how to get started in the cleaning business. With three primary ways to begin building your cleaning business success formula there are some options:

- Purchase a franchise - a franchise will provide you with a detailed and structured plan of attack, proven systems, and all the support you could need along the way. Although having everything laid out for you has its benefits, franchises can be very expensive while limiting you to ONLY the franchise name, branding, processes, etc.

- The "Sink or Swim" approach - jumping out there on your own may seem easier, more exciting, and cheaper but there are other variables to consider. Creating your own path will give you unlimited freedom in how you build your business but will most likely result in many costly mistakes (Best practices in some form or fashion, especially when it comes to bidding on jobs and service contracts, can help save you time, money, and heart-ache!)

- Investing in start-up training material - this route gives you the best of both worlds at a low cost. By gaining knowledge from the successes of people already experienced in starting cleaning businesses, you can find a great balance of proven models for success and the choice to implement them however you see fit!

Due diligence is vital to your success especially when considering starting your own business. A cleaning business can be very rewarding and challenging at the same time. Take your time with this decision. Find the approach that best suits you. Prepare for hard work. Combine your plan with an unwavering commitment to success and you will achieve it!
